We Need to Talk -  Critical Employee Conversations

Kerin Stackpole, Attorney, Director, Employment + Labor Law Group, Paul, Frank, + Collins

Did you know employers are legally required to discuss an employee’s accommodation needs under the Americans with Disabilities Act? In addition to complying with federal and state laws, there are practical reasons to have timely and appropriate conversations with employees. Employers who communicate clear expectations and provide constructive feedback find their employees are more productive and stay in their positions longer.  This session will review legal obligations and practical advice for the critical conversations municipal employers must engage in with their employees.

Vermont’s New Paid Leave Law - Are you in compliance yet?

Vermont’s new paid sick leave law became effective January 1, 2017. There is no exemption for small employers so all municipalities are either already affected by the law or will be by January 1, 2018. This session will help you better under the law’s requirements so you can ensure your policies and procedures are up-to-date and legally compliant.

Dirk Anderson, General Counsel, Vermont Department of Labor

Return to Work - It’s Complicated

Whether, when, and how an employee returns to work after an absence can be tricky territory. Different situations may invoke multiple laws that intersect and overlap such as workers’ compensation, the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA), the Vermont Parental and Family Leave Act (VPFLA) and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA.) How can you ensure a worker’s safe return and respect his/her legal rights while protecting the town’s best interests? This session will clear up some misconceptions and help you navigate the maze. Fred Satink will be on hand to offer practical advice from a VLCT-PACIF perspective.

Brian Monaghan, Partner, Monaghan Safar Ducham PLLC

Fred Satink, VLCT Manager, Underwriting, Safety, and Health Promotion
